Sandblasting in San Antonio

Sandblasting is traditional dry abrasive blasting. We spray dry abrasive at a surface to remove paint, rust, mill scale, old coatings and grime, leaving clean metal or a fresh profile ready for a new finish. It's fast, thorough, and the right choice for a lot of heavy jobs.

The surfaces it suits are wide: metal sand blasting, concrete, stone, limestone, granite, brick, and wood — fences, beams, furniture and signs. We also blast trucks and trailers, and cut lettering and designs into granite and stone. For painted brick, graffiti, pools, soda, glass bead, corn cob, walnut shell and log homes, we handle those on our dustless and media blasting page. For structural steel, heavy equipment and fleets, see our industrial page. For car frames, see wheels and automotive.

Why This Matters in San Antonio

San Antonio's climate is hard on metal and stone. Long, hot summers with intense sun, frequent spring hailstorms, and sudden heavy rain and flash flooding — the reason the region is called Flash Flood Alley — all wear out paint and coatings. The very hard, mineral-rich water from the Edwards Aquifer leaves scale, and limestone and caliche ground and Hill Country stone homes are everywhere. Ranch and farm country to the north, west and east is full of pipe gates, trailers and equipment that rust and need blasting, and the I-35 and I-10 freight corridors mean plenty of work trucks and trailers. For sandblasting, that means a steady supply of rust, old paint and limestone surfaces that need stripping back to clean.

Care & Prevention

Once a surface is blasted clean, get a coating on it soon — bare metal rusts fast in this humidity. For stone and concrete, seal after blasting to slow staining. Keep blasted metal dry until it's coated, and avoid leaving blasted items out in the rain. A coating maintenance plan helps steel and equipment that gets blasted and re-coated on a schedule.

Pricing Guide

What drives the cost is the size and number of parts, how much old coating and rust has to come off, the surface or substrate, the finish and number of coats, the color choice, any masking, any repairs, removal and reinstallation for installed pieces, and travel distance for mobile work. We never quote blind.

No dollar figures here on purpose — the price depends on the job. We set your exact price after we see the surface.

Is this the right fit? The right method is decided after we see the item or surface in person. Some items may not suit a given process — for example thin sheet metal, plastic, glass, rubber or cast parts that may warp, pit or outgas, or items with lead paint that need special handling. We'll tell you straight if a different approach makes more sense.

Sandblasting FAQs

How much does it cost to sandblast a vehicle?

It depends on the vehicle and how much old paint, rust and undercoating has to come off, plus the size and the abrasive. A bare frame is different from a full body. We don't quote blind — we look at the job and give you a clear price. What drives it is the surface area, how many layers of old coating are on it, and how clean you need it.

Can sandblasting remove paint?

Yes — removing paint is one of the main things sandblasting does. Dry abrasive blasting strips paint, rust, mill scale, old coatings and grime back to bare metal. The abrasive and pressure are picked for the surface, because softer materials need a gentler touch than heavy steel.

Can you sandblast plastic?

Usually not with traditional dry sandblasting — plastic, glass, rubber and fiberglass can warp, pit or crack under hard abrasive. For delicate surfaces we use softer media like soda, plastic media, corn cob or walnut shell. The right method is decided after we see the item.

What's the difference between sandblasting and powder coating?

Sandblasting strips a surface clean — it removes paint, rust and old coatings to bare metal. Powder coating puts a finish on — it's the colored, cured coat that goes on after. They're two steps of the same job: blast to clean metal, then coat to protect it.

Does powder coating include sandblasting?

Most powder coating jobs start with blasting to bare metal so the powder bonds, and we include that prep in the quote. Some items come to us already clean. We'll tell you exactly what's included when we look at the job.
