What Powder Coating Is

Powder coating is a dry finish. Powder is sprayed onto metal with an electrostatic charge — the charge pulls the powder onto the part so it wraps evenly — then the part goes into an oven and the powder melts and flows into a hard, smooth coat. There's no solvent, no dripping, and the finish goes on thicker than most paint. The result resists chips, scratches and sun-fading better than spray paint, which is why it's the go-to for metal that lives outdoors or gets handled.

Most powder coating jobs start with blasting to bare metal so the powder bonds to clean steel. We coat brackets, signs, equipment, motorcycle and ATV parts, trailers, and architectural and commercial metal. For wheels and automotive parts and for gates, fences, railings and patio furniture, those have their own pages with the details.

Why This Matters in San Antonio

San Antonio sits in a climate that's hard on metal, paint and outdoor finishes. Long, hot summers push many days near or above 100°F with intense sun that fades and chalks ordinary paint and dries out wood. Spring hailstorms — the April 2016 hailstorm was one of the costliest in Texas history — dent and chip metal and finishes. Sudden heavy rain and flash flooding are why the region is called Flash Flood Alley. The water from the Edwards Aquifer is very hard and mineral-rich, leaving white calcium scale on pool tile, fixtures and metal. Limestone and caliche ground, and Hill Country homes built with limestone and stone, are common. Ranch and farm country to the north, west and east is full of pipe gates, trailers and equipment. The I-35 and I-10 freight corridors and the Eagle Ford Shale oilfield to the south mean plenty of work trucks, fleets and heavy equipment. San Antonio also has a long tradition of decorative ironwork — wrought iron gates, railings, security doors and window bars — a strong truck, custom-car and wheel culture, and river trips and lake days on the Guadalupe and Comal rivers and Canyon Lake, with boat and tube trailers in and out of the water.

For powder coating, that means the sun is the big enemy — ordinary paint fades and chalks fast here, and hail dents and chips softer finishes. A cured powder coat goes on thicker and resists both better, which is why it pays off on gates, railings, patio furniture, wheels and equipment that sit out in it year-round.

Care & Prevention

Rinse powder-coated items with mild soap and water and avoid harsh solvents. Touch up chips from hail or gravel before rust creeps under the finish. Keep sprinkler spray off coated gates and fences so hard-water spots don't build up. A light coat of wax helps outdoor metal stay glossy. With basic care, a powder coat keeps looking good for years.

Powder Coating Colors & Finishes

A powder coat finish can look and feel very different depending on the powder. Gloss is shiny and easy to clean. Satin has a soft sheen that hides fingerprints. Matte is flat and modern. Textured finishes add grip and hide small flaws — popular on outdoor ironwork. Metallic powders have a sparkle in the finish. Candy colors are translucent over a base for depth. Clear coat protects a base color or a raw metal look.

Single-stage powder coat is one coat of powder with no clear — a solid color, simple and cost-effective. Two-stage uses a base plus a clear or color coat, which is how candy, metallic and chrome-look finishes get their depth. We do custom powder coating and color matching in many cases — bring us a sample or a code and we'll get as close as we can.

Powder Coating Cost & Prices

What drives powder coating prices is the size and number of parts, how much old coating and rust has to come off, the surface or substrate, the finish and number of coats, the color choice, any masking, any repairs, and removal and reinstallation for installed pieces. We never quote blind — we look at the job first.

No dollar figures here on purpose — the price depends on the job. We set your exact price after we see the item. Try our cost calculator for a rough idea.

Powder Coating vs Paint

A cured powder finish is thicker and tougher than most spray paint. Because the powder is melted and flowed in an oven, it forms a continuous coat that resists chips, scratches and sun-fading better than paint, and it contains no solvents. For metal that lives outdoors or gets handled, powder coating usually lasts longer and looks better over time.

Paint still makes sense for quick touch-ups, items that can't go in an oven, or colors and effects that are easier to spray. For most metal that needs to last in the Texas sun, powder coating is the better long-term answer.

Commercial Powder Coating

We do commercial powder coating for businesses and contractors — production runs of brackets, signs, equipment parts and fabricated metal. Larger batches bring the cost per piece down, and we can hold a finish and color across a run. If you have recurring work, talk to us about a coating maintenance plan for your steel and equipment.

A Note on Mobile Powder Coating

Blasting and prep can be done on-site, but the powder itself has to be cured in an oven, so the coating is done in the shop. Mobile and on-site work means blasting and prep — not curing at your location. For large or installed pieces, we talk through removal, transport and reinstallation when you book.

Is this the right fit? The right method is decided after we see the item or surface in person. Some items may not suit a given process — for example thin sheet metal, plastic, glass, rubber or cast parts that may warp, pit or outgas, or items with lead paint that need special handling. We'll tell you straight if a different approach makes more sense.

Powder Coating FAQs

Is powder coating heat resistant?

Powder coating handles normal heat well — it's used on engine parts, grills, exhaust trim and equipment that get hot. How much heat a given finish takes depends on the powder, the color and the part. We don't promise specific heat ratings; we'll talk through your part and what it's exposed to, and pick a finish that makes sense for it.

How long does powder coat last?

A properly prepped and cured powder coat lasts a long time — far longer than most spray paint on metal that lives outdoors. Exactly how long depends on the sun, weather, care and what the item bumps into. We don't promise a set lifespan in years. What we do promise is careful prep and a finish built to stand up to the Texas sun.

Can aluminum be powder coated?

Yes. Aluminum powder coating is common — patio furniture, wheels, brackets and architectural metal all coat well. Aluminum is blasted and prepped differently than steel so the powder bonds right, and it goes through the same oven cure. We'll tell you if your aluminum part is a good candidate after we see it.

Can you paint powder coated aluminum?

You can, but powder coating over powder coating usually holds up better than spray paint over powder. If the existing coat is sound, we can strip, re-prep and re-coat it. If you want to paint over it instead, the surface has to be scuffed and cleaned so the paint sticks. We'll explain the trade-offs for your specific piece.
